Re: City lacks access
to Whitted records, Aug. 9.
The Times has reached
a new low in its campaign to turn public opinion against Albert Whitted
Municipal Airport in St. Petersburg. The comments of your attorney, Penelope
Bryan, invoking the fear factor of Sept. 11 and implying that nefarious
characters may be using the airport are unwarranted and certainly do not
contribute to rational debate on this issue.
Why does the Times, an
otherwise fine newspaper, persist in this one-sided campaign to close the
airport? Have you ever sent a reporter to the airport to actually talk to the
people who use it and work there? If you did, you might find a teenage student
pilot, with dreams of becoming an airline pilot, preparing for her next lesson.
You might find a family taking off for a weekend getaway. You might find a
businessman, frustrated by the current state of commercial air travel, arriving
for a meeting with a customer. You might find a weathered old pilot, who hasn't
lost the joy of living, giving a wide-eyed child his first taste of flying. You
might find the other side of the story.
