Letter From The Editor

As we approach 9/11/2002 a lot of us will be thinking about where we were a year ago on that Tragic day.  I know that one event has changed the way most people feel about aviation forever. I remember reading about someone who reportedly called a FSS and was told that he might as well sell his airplane. The days that followed made me wonder if I would ever be able to exercise my rights as a pilot to enjoy the freedom of flying again.

I think organizations like the EAA and AOPA made a big difference in allowing us to return to the sky in spite of the irrational fear and panic by the general public about GA.  On the local level clubs like EAA445 and the Tallahassee Flying Club helped to unite pilots and get the word out about the many changes that we were confronted with.

As our Chapter looks to elect new officers, this may be a good time to come see what the Big Bend EAA has to offer and better yet what you may have to offer it.

I hope to see you on Tuesday the 10th.

 John Sivyer

SEPTEMBER  PLANNER

09/04/2002  The next meeting of the Flying Club will be on Wednesday, September 4th, at 7:00pm, at China Super Buffet, located at 2698 N. Monroe Street.  Our presenter for the evening will be A.J. Brickler.  AJ has generously volunteered to lead a group discussion focused on some great safety tapes he has subscribed to.  I believe (subject to check) that Richard Collins narrates these tapes.  As I understand it, we get to hear some emergency situations and then decide how we probably would react today and how we should react for the safest outcome.  This should be a very interesting evening, leading to a lively discussion, with all of us taking home some important safety tips.  Thanks to AJ for suggesting this activity.  It will be a nice break from having one person carry the burden of speaking to the group.  This way, everyone has the opportunity to have input and to think their way through some situations they may actually encounter some day.   - Angela Green

09/07/2002  Pensacola, Florida. EAA Chapter 485 Fly-in Gourmet Breakfast takes place in Jim Baker's hangar at Ferguson Airport (82J). Contact Jim Baker, 850/455-8130.

09/10/2002 EAA445 Meeting 6:30 Pm @Flightline  Guest Speakers will be Ron Fisher and Bill Humbert

Ron will discuss the Role of the FAA-designated volunteer Aviation Safety Counselors (ASCs), and also discuss the setting in the Big Bend area whereby 16 ASCs function both individually and collectively under the auspices of the Big Bend Aviation Safety Council. We have learned that our organizational arrangement in the Big Bend area is unique in the United States, and is being observed with the possibility of being modeled in other areas.

Bill will discuss the FAA's Pilot Proficiency Awards Program (WINGS) that is described in AC 61-91H.  This program is open to all licensed pilots, as well as pilots of ultralights. It is a program designed to support the needs of a general aviation pilot for a period of twenty years if a pilot takes advantage of it.
