Icing

This is a forward Bill Humbert sent from Jim Bragdon

In light of the loss of Continental flight 3407 over the outer marker of R/W 23 at Buffalo..... reviewing the subject of tailplane icing might be wise.

Pay attention to the use of autopilot and the recovery..

FOR THOSE 'GONE WEST'...
Do you have a friend or family member who has "Gone West" that you would like to honor for positively impacting the lives of those around them through their spirit, dedication, and passion for aviation? EAA has a very special way to do just that. You can submit an account to EAA's website on the wonderful life they lived and the impact they made. Following each entry is a memorial guest book for families and friends to remember and honor their loved one. Entries marked "MW" are also immortalized on the Memorial Wall located in on the EAA's grounds by Fergus Chapel. If you would like to submit an obituary for a member of the aviation community that has "Gone West," click here.

March 2009

From the President

Things are looking up! The weather is getting nice and spring is almost here. It's a great time to get out and do some flying.

Last month I got a chance to fly as safety pilot for Scott O'Brien. It was my first flight in a Maule with one of the best pilots around.  The video below doesn't really capture how good he is but I thought people might like to see it.

Please keep those e-mails and ideas comming. This is a great Chapter.

I hope to see you at a meeting or event in the near future.

Safety Corner

How To Avoid a Birdstrike
In the January/February 2009 issue of FAA Aviation News, Editor Susan Parson writes, “The typical advice with respect to birds (at least those you can see) is to climb, since the bird’s instinctive reaction is to dive for greater airspeed…the most important thing you can do is, as always, fly the airplane.” See the article on “Things That Go Bump in the Flight” for resources on avoiding birds and other wildlife. See also “Beware of Birds and Wildlife” in the September/October 2007 issue.

SAFETY PILOT

Last Update 03/04/09

Need a Safety Pilot to stay current or to help with training?  Below is a list of people who have volunteered to be Safety Pilot's. Give  them a call.  They will be happy to schedule time to fly with you.

If you would like to add your name to  the list click here , type Name,  phone number and ratings then press send.  One big advantage for the Safety Pilot is that he can log his time as Pilot-in-Command also since both pilots are required for the flight. See Aviation Safety Article  for details.

Here is a film clip from the Austrian archives about the Wright Brothers demonstrating their plane in Italy in 1909. What is even more fantastic is there was an on-board camera on the Wright plane and the last part of this film shows it. Wilbur Wright is at the controls on both of the flights http://www.europafilmtreasures.eu/PY/322/fiche_technique.htm?ID=322
GREAT video considering it's 100 years old and the quality/weight of the equipment of that day. Note the pitch stability and the yaw string on the canard.

Enjoy,

Tom Baldwin

John,

You may recall we discussed listing Richard Hamilton's offer on the EAA445 website

Hamilton is a dealer for ELECTRONICS INTERNATIONAL INC.,

They make an electronic engine analyzer which allows a pilot to monitor both EGT & CHT temperatures on all cylinders using a single bar graph guage.

This is a great asset especially while in flight, providing early warning of possible engine problems.

They advertise their product in most aviation magazines.

As a dealer he gets a discount, and he is willing to pass this along to our members if they want it, with no labor requirements.

We use this product in both of our aerobatic aircraft.

Their website is
www.Buy-EI.com
