January 2009

Back in the left seat.

As many of you know, I was out of flying for a few years.  I am happy to report now that after hangar flying with many of the members and doing aerobatics in the front seat with Pete Rayner in his Christen Eagle and shooting approaches in the right seat with AJ Brickler in his Cirrus, I am back in the left seat again.

2008 was another great year for EAA Chapter 445.  Under President Danny Deason's leadership and a lot of hard work from all the members, we had another successful Airfest and flew more Young Eagles than ever before(438).

The board of directors are planning even more activities this year and we are looking for your input.  Please let us know if you have any ideas for fly outs, activities or projects you would like to see us persue.

Happy New Year!

Hope to see you at the airport.

John

Picture of the Month - Farewell Pizza Hut!

Roger and Ed wave from atop the Old terminal (Pizza Hut) .  It was torn down last month. We will have to find them another place to conduct ground ops for Airfest 2009.

From The Tower

Tallahassee Air Traffic Tower and TRACON look forward to a busy year in 2009, not necessarily with more air traffic but with the training of new employees. GA traffic counts are down at most airports and about thirty (30) percent at Tallahassee Regional Airport.  By the middle of the year there will be as many as fifteen (15) developmental controllers working in the Tower and TRACON. The new employees come from various backgrounds that include retired military controllers, college graduates that have completed the FAA CTI program and employees that meet specific technical requirements. I am sure most of you who fly have noticed the new voices on the ATC frequencies and their sometimes slowness to respond to your
requests. They all are doing a great job and should be qualified CPC's, Certified Professional Controllers, after their training program has been completed; usually taking approximately twenty-four (24) months to qualify. What does this mean to the pilot? Well, it means you need to listen to the ATC instructions and all of the transmissions for accuracy.  Don't assume anything and we all know what "ass-u-me" means. Verify control instructions anytime you have doubts about what you should do. Are read-backs required anytime a controller issues instructions or clearances? Well the answer is NO, not all communications require read-backs. Check you AIM for specifics but things like "hold short instructions", reporting leaving altitudes and the new assigned altitude, or anytime ATC requests a read-back are examples of required read-backs. Communications are most important these days, especially when it comes to preventing runway incursions, pilot deviations and controller operational errors. Please take time to look at your AIM's
and the "Pilot-Controller Glossary" to review the proper phraseology you should be using when communicating with ATC. Remember, words really have meaning when it comes to Pilot-ATC communications. Please call to schedule a visit with us at the Tower and meet the group of controllers who look forward every day in providing you with the best and safest ATC services possible!

Safe Flying,
Ron Fisher, Air Traffic Manager, TLH ATCT

I learned from that

The airplanes closed at a combined airspeed of 1,000 miles an hour. At that velocity, a distant airplane—a speck on the horizon—will fill the windshield in a matter of seconds.

The following Vanity Fair magazine acticle was sent in by Colin Rolf" In September 2006 a crash occurred at 37,000 feet over Brazil...  My nephew flies a GIII for Excelaire in N.Y., and one of the aircraft involved was a new Legacy 600 being ferried back to N.Y. for Excelaire by two other Excelaire pilots, so it was of particular interest to me.  Some months later there was a report which pretty much exonerated the Excelaire pilots, but now an extensive article in Vanity Fair magazine sheds some new light on the crash.  Inasmuch as I forwarded the previous report, I thought you might be interested in this latest one.... embedded in the article is also a link to hear portions of the cockpit voice recordings from both aircraft, but (being on dialup speed) I haven't yet had a chance to listen to them...."  Colin

More info on the crash.
