Young Eagles Program tops 1,031,000
********************
The Young Eagles program continues to move forward in 2004.  While we
may have reached our goal in 2003, the program will continue as an on-going activity for EAA Members and Chapters.  There will be some changes, but the basic premise of the Young Eagles program -- pilots and children taking a flight in a General Aviation aircraft -- will remain unchanged.  In the coming months, you'll hear more about our plans to greatly enhance the Young Eagles web site and create on-going, optional programming to assist interested Young Eagles who wish to
continue their interest in aviation.

President's Pilot to Raise Money for Angel Flight East

EAA Member to Try for Record 100 Landings in One Day
January 30, 2004 - To call Lt. Col. Charles L. "Lindy" Kirkland a "chopper pilot" may be understating things a bit. He is an operations officer and a command pilot with Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) in Quantico, Virginia. HMX-1 is the squadron that flies "Marine One" and provides rotary wing transport to the president and vice president, heads of state, and cabinet members ... (read more)

Rich Ledson's excellent presentation at the last meeting brought a discussion of what is available as a guide to owners working on their own airplanes.  Thanks to Peter Rayner for sending in this information.

No Appointment Necessary on EAA Members Site
Medical Assistance has a new shingle on the EAA Members Only home page at http://members.eaa.org. Easily recognizable (look for the doctor logo) and navigation friendly, the site houses up-to-date information on airman medical certification, the EAA Aeromedical Advisory program, and EAA Pilot Advocates. There are also useful resource links, articles, and downloadable FAA forms to help resolve a medical issue and keep you flying.

NEED AWOS? JUST CALL ON YOUR CELLPHONE  -from AvWeb
In a nifty new service for pilots, a quick toll-free phone call can now connect you to any AWOS in the U.S. -- if you don't mind having to listen to a short advertisement before you get to the weather. The service, aptly called "anyAWOS," is a new product offered by Mackinac Software. One of the co-creators of the system, Bill McUmber, told AVweb: "Although my company is a software company, I am an active IFR pilot and thought it would be useful to be able to check conditions on the fly -- hence this system." After dialing the toll-free number (877-any-AWOS, or 877-269-2967), callers can enter any three-digit airport ID and -- after choosing from a list of possible matches, and listening to a word from their sponsors -- they will be connected to that airport's AWOS or ATIS. Capital City Air-Fest 2004  May 15th and 16th

I have known today a magnificent intoxication. I have learnt how it feels to be a bird. I have flown. Yes I have flown. I am still astonished at it, still deeply moved. — Le Figaro, 1908

The Spirit of Volunteering

Two years ago I was almost ready to quit the Chapter because I didn’t think they were doing enough.  Then it occurred to me that “they” was “me”.  It wasn’t until I volunteered to become the Young Eagles Coordinator that I realized how much fun it was to get involved.

This will be the first time in the history of our chapter that we will have a fly-in at TLH.  I am encouraged by the number of people who have volunteered to help so far.  We will need all the help we can get to pull it off.  I know I can count on everyone to pitch in and do what they can.

I’m looking forward to working with you,

John

       Picture of the Month

EAA 445 Member Captain Isaac Lang snapped this picture from the cockpit of the Airbus A320-215 - ship number 3207-while flying from Las Vegas to Detroit.   His copilot, Mike Mouyal, is from the south of France and lives in Miami. They  both work out of DTW for Northwest.

ANGEL FLIGHT - by Scott Sutor

Yesterday was my first Angel Flight. I picked up a 5 yr old girl and her mom at Gainsville. She had a heart transplant at age one. The destination was Destin, Fl. Climbing thru the clouds to our crusing altitude of 8000, she tapped me on the shoulder and told me to watch out for Angels. You had to be there to see the expression on her face. She really believed it. We had to land at our alternate airport, Crestview, because Destin was reporting 300 ft and rain. Crestview was 900. They have an ILS approach and we broke out of the clouds at 700 ft. The total flight was 4 hrs with 15 minutes of actual IFR. It was a great flight with a happy little girl who belives that Angels do exist..SGS  - Click here for more information on Angel Flight SE

E-Mails

Scott:,

That was an incredibly inspirational email.  I'm working on my IFR and MEL right now and can't wait to get started on Angel Flight myself.

Best,

Rick Wilson

John, I have reserved space inside and outside the Capitol for Aviation Day on April 14th. Would EAA like a display space? Could we even get an experimental airplane for display?

This could be an excellent opportunity for EAA to get some recognition. AOPA will be there.

Thanks,

Featured Safety Tip from Hangar Talk
I hate to always bring up the FAA way of doing things but here it is:
See paragraph 4-3-23 in the AIM (Use of Aircraft Lights)
This paragraph explains to the pilot additional reasons to use those lights, day and night. I can assure you that even during daylight hours the Control Tower is able to make visual contact with the aircraft sooner if your lights are ON. Other aircraft are able to make visual contact with an aircraft that has ALL their lights on sooner, helping the controller do their job of separating aircraft. It is even more important at a non-towered airport to use your lights at all times to help see and avoid other aircraft. All you need to do is look at the number of midair collisions that happen in and around a non-towered airport to understand why any means you have to alert other aircraft of your presents is vitally important! Think about this........... Why do aircarrier aircraft turn on those headlights leaving 10,000 feet?
