From The Tower-Taken from Hangar Talk-By Ron Fisher

The next paragraph says it all.........I hope this is a temporary alert. We look forward to facility visits resuming soon.

The security level at all FAA facilities has been elevated to “ORANGE.” This level restricts access to the facility by essential FAA employee’s ONLY and with coordination, badged FAA contractors. We all know the drill, so, be alert to any specious activities in or around the facility and report them to law enforcement. Thanks!

I expect we will be fluctuating from YELLOW to ORANGE levels into the future as long as the terrorist threat exists.

Careers in Aviation

There is little or no awareness of aviation career opportunities among students and qualified prospects, and aviation companies can no longer rely on traditional sources for talented people.

In response, Careers in Aviation, Inc., a non-profit organization, has developed a multimedia strategy for promoting aviation to America's youth. This program is designed to ultimately help connect qualified talent with America's aviation and aerospace industries.

A Few Words From The President

2003 was a great year for EAA Chapter 445.  Under former President Frank Smith's leadership we had more activities and more members signed up than ever before.

We are in the process of planning many new activities for 2004 including the possibility of a fly-in at TLH.  You should be receiving a survey by e-mail  this week. It is important that we hear from as many people as possible so we can tailor activities around your interests.   Please take a few mins to give us your feedback even if you are not  a member.

As we begin 2004, I encourage you to renew your membership and get involved as much as possible.  If you are not currently a member, this would be a good time for you to join.  It's only $25.00 ,  you become part of a growing  organization and get a T-shirt to boot.

We have a lot of talented pilots in the Big Bend area.   I'm looking forward to another fun filled year and meeting some of you for the first time.  I hope we all get to fly more in 2004!

John

What Did You Do on The 100th Anniversary of Powered Flight!

A couple of locals tell their story

I picked up an Angel Flight traveler at Sowell - PFN. Pickup time was 8 local, so I left here about 7:30 lcl on the hopes of getting a good headstart. I wanted to get to Lake City by lunch!

Icing occured at 4000 ft. OAT was 30F at onset and dropped to 25F enroute  to PC (westerly heading and tops were getting higher) I picked up about 1/4  to 1/2" rime in a period of about 10 minutes. I reported light rime at 4000,  28deg OAT to TYN APPR. The way I knew I had ice was that I saw it as it  covered the windscreen, on the wing struts, fuel vent etc. I experienced it  long enough to appreciate (enjoy!?) it and then requested 4500 feet,  (essentially VFR on top) from TYN, which they granted. 4500 put me in the clear (always have an out). I experienced no noticeable decrease in  perfomance. I lost all the ice in the descent into PFN.

We flew to Tampa Vandenberg VDF and arrived at 11:00 lcl, about 1:45 enroute. I got rerouted immediately after departing PFN  via CLRRK - I had filed PFN.TERES.HEVVN.CTY.PIE, so the NE vector cost me a few minutes. Winds at FL60 were 3041, and my ground speed was typically 170+ all the way (179 as I motored back over TLH). Turbulence was widely reported, but the air above the ovc was excellent. My passenger slept the entire way until well into our descent. We dropped back into the soup nw of Zephyrhills with a THUD, waking her up with a startle. Quite rough the last ten minutes or so. Got vectored to the LOC23 approach (to circle) at VDF,
but broke out above the 1700' IA segment altitude. Visibility was
reasonable, so I cancelled. Wild ride to runway 36, but set it down pretty smooth - no flaps, good speed and landed long - the "Sivyer Method" - haha.

Had to file to come home as I was not going to subject myself to that ride below. Flew home at 4000 in choppy clag until Crystal River. Clag turned into clear 45knot headwind. 106KGS home to Tallahassee (154KTAS!, but I may be off some I suspect). Below 2000 at TLH was GODAWFUL. Cleared for visual 36, wind 17@300 Yuck - asked for 27. "Negative - CJ on 4 mile final" OK, I can deal with that, I just hate xwinds on my spindly-legged rg! "Wind 19@290" OK, that does it. I tell tower I'll accept the extended downwind to
R27, got the Citation in sight!     - Kevin Flemming

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey!It wasn't that bad! But, I had a small problem. I rented the 172 from Flightline and it would not crank.(Battery low).SO then I decided to take the PA28161.It was windy but that didn't spoiled my day. When I was a student pilot,I flew in worse winds. In fact,I did my long distance in this kind of weather. It was light wind when I tookoff but after I left,It picked up big time.I had fun with it.Well back to yesturday,I took off and headed towards Cannon Creek. My ground speed was 151 knots,I was indicating 123 knots. It didn't take long top get there but the coulds started to get thick. So!I flew below the clouds under VFR.By the way,There was lots of holes top fly through.

I manage to fly over the field but didn't like the winds. It was bumpy below 3200 feet.I did notice about seven planes at the BBQ place. So I decided to head on back.I indicated at 123knots and ground speed was 85 Knots.
It took awhile but we got back to TLH.My landing was the worst ever!!!I will practice crosswind landings in the futur,I do need practice.

In all,It felt great to take part on this great day. - Marc Dupuis

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't fly on 12/17, but instead took a tour of the control tower facility with my family. Ron fisher and his team, especially Steve Leggett did a fantastic job of making us feel welcome, and showing us around the facility. We spent time in the control tower and in the approach/departure radar room. The controlers and our guide were helpful, friendly and informative. This tour is a must do for pilots, and anyone interested in this miracle we call aviation. - Marty Roberts

E-Mails

I'm glad the 'locals' decided to 'keep' the BBFC. I kept quiet during the vote because I am not present on the local area and cannot contribute much to getting any work done. I do, however, enjoy the Hangar Talk chats and want to see them continue.
Thanks again and I'll visit you in Tally when I get the chance.

Sincerely,
Winston Scott

I have enjoyed Hangar Talk. There are some very interested and knowlegable(myself excluded) folks out there. They bring up some good topics.
