David Williams our Secretary has been sending out hard copy reminders  of the meetings and upcoming events.  He feels it is important for people to receive a mailing even though they might already be receiving the information thru this e-newsletter.  It turns out the cost is minimal and David doesn't mind including everyone on the member list.

If you would rather not not receive a hard copy,  you can e-mail David by clicking here.

 The Survey Says!

We sent out a survey at the beginning of the month to get ideas on how to improve our Chapter.  The response was very positive and many new ideas and suggestions were recorded.  We thank everyone who responded and will be trying hard to implement as many ideas as we can.

One of the best ways to make sure your idea is acted on would be to get involved and help to make it happen.  As long as the board of directors feels that it is in the best interest of the Chapter, they will support you all the way.

THE INTERNET GOES AIRBORNE  from Av-web

Forget the six-month-old movies and TV reruns, you'll soon be able to surf the Internet on some airlines and we have to wonder if GA applications (especially the experimental kind) can be far behind. Connexion by Boeing announced this week that at least five airlines (none of them American) have confirmed plans to install high-speed wireless internet service on planes used for long-haul flights. The systems allow laptop users to access Internet, intranet and e-mail in the air. They'll even allow e-mail exchanges between computers on different aircraft. "History will record 2004 as the year when air travelers for the first time could choose to be connected while in flight to family, colleagues and friends," said Connexion President Scott Carson. THUNDERBIRDS CRASH: TRUTH IN IMAGES
AVweb has confirmed that the image last Thursday posted to our Picture Of The Week section of Capt. Christopher Stricklin's Sept. 14, 2003, ejection from Thunderbirds jet number 6 -- roughly eight-tenths of a second before aircraft impact -- is in fact authentic. It was shot by Staff Sgt. Bennie J. Davis III, Still Photographer, U.S. Air Force, from the catwalk atop the tower at Mountain Home AFB, and was not officially released by the Air Force until last Friday afternoon. See AVweb's NewsWire for yet another video (including audio), more images, and more details. More...

February 2004

                     From The Left Seat

It looks like we are off to a good start for 2004.  We had around 40 people at our  first meeting and 20 at our pancake breakfast with five airplanes flying out to Jefferson Landing afterwards.  Six new members signed up and  twenty five people have renewed their memberships.

In addition to that, we will be having our first ever Fly-in at TLH on May 15th and another less structured one later in the year at Jefferson landing.

It is encouraging to see new members jumping in with both feet to help.  Peter Raynor volunteered to be the Video tape librarian and Jim Cammons will be heading up the EAA445 float in the Springtime Tallahassee parade.

We will need lots of involvement as we prepare for the Fly-in and other events.  I am confident each member will do what they can to help.

I feel fortunate to be a part of this elite group of people and am looking forward to a great year !

John

Thanks were voiced to John for taking over the leadership role for the upcoming fly-in.

Item Six

The board approved the idea that an additional fly-in would be staged at Jefferson Landing this year.

There was no other business brought before the board for discussion or approval.

This and future board meetings will be conducted in the conference room in the old Airport terminal and will coincide with the once-per-month pancake breakfast. Board meetings will begin promptly at 8am and end at 8:45am.  All board meetings are open to the membership.

Mr.Schiff:  I am a WWII Navy seaplane/dive bomber pilot still privilaged to enjoy recreational flying. This E-mail is to congratulate and thank you for the excellent review and integrity of your Dec. 03 "Total Time" commentary!! And I hope you reach 300 types in 2004!! -  Gar Braun

Hi Gar,

Thanks for taking the time, and I'm delighted that you enjoyed my column.

Thanks also for your hope that I reach 300 types in '04. It'll probably take a couple of more years, but I'll be working on it.

 Best wishes,

J-3 Jump Start

Reference the picture of the desperate character standing on the axle of the right wheel while flipping the prop, I didn't know this had happened to two of us. In November, 1946, while flying over the Santee-Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina on a duck counting flight for the state, low & slow, the predictable happened. Carb ice, engine quite, over water beyond gliding distance to land. Only choice - have the observer hold the stick straight up from the ground, climb out, and get it going - FAST!. It worked. I sure miss the bunch at Tally - maybe I'll make it up for the fly-in this year. - Bob Hayden
