Local Man Wins Skyhawk

A.C. "Doug" Douglass of Tallahassee, Florida, is the official winner of Sporty’s 2004 Skyhawk Sweepstakes and now the owner of a brand new Cessna 172SP. Sporty’s Founder/Chairman Hal Shevers informed Douglass, a recent student pilot, by telephone that he is the winner. Douglass said, "This is the dream of a lifetime."

Civil Air Patrol- Capt James Dodson

Civil Air Patrol volunteers responded to 59 Emergency Locator Transmitter signals originating within Florida during the first six months of 2004.

In just the first three weeks of July, the Civil Air Patrol has responded to a whopping 20 ELT signals in Florida.  Most of these have been false alarms.

The actual count of ELT activations is expected to be even higher, as the number of ELhTs that airport officials disable are not included in this count.

Please continue to monitor 121.5 at all times.  If you detect a signal on that frequency, contact the Flight Service Station IMMEDIATELY.  This applies whether you are in flight, on the ramp, or travelling down the highway listening to a portable radio.

If you turn off an inadvertently activated ELT, contact the Flight Service Station IMMEDIATELY.  Rescue resources may already be on the way.  By contacting the Flight Service Station, you may be able halt the response and avoid placing the searchers in harms way.

ELTs SAVE LIVES.  AVOID FALSE ALARMS.  ALWAYS  ALWAYS FILE/ACTIVATE/CLOSE YOUR FLIGHT PLANS.

ALWAYS MONITOR 121.5  YOUR FELLOW AVIATORS ARE COUNTING ON YOU!

Young Eagles Welcomes its New Leader

Harrison Ford's first visit

to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh was as the new Young Eagles Chairman. He was part of the wildly successful Gathering of Eagles benefit for the EAA youth aviation program. Ford helped reposition the spotlight on EAA's Young Eagles program which announced its expansion at a special Wednesday night Theater in the Woods program. Ford appeared there with previous chairmen Gen. Chuck Yeager and actor Cliff Robertson. Later in the week, Yeager graciously accepted the Oshkosh Key to the City Award at the annual Mayor's Breakfast.

I recently heard from Angela Green down at Leeward in Ocala and was surprised to learn that she was selling real estate instead of practicing law.  Angela said she has had a broker's license for over 30 years and has kept it active all this time.  She said she was pretty burned out from practicing law and had been looking to make a change when it dawned on her during a flight one day.  Looking at all the new construction as far as the eye could see, she said she finally had the answer to her question of "what is a good industry to get into in this area of the state?" and so she made her decision to go back into real estate.

Angela is associated with Coldwell Banker Ellison Realty of Ocala.  Although she is working primarily in the general residential market in the SE part of Marion County, she does have property listed for sale at Leeward Air Ranch.  If you are interested in getting a lot or home at Leeward, give her a call.  Or if you know anyone who is interested in property in Marion, Lake, or Sumter Counties, please make a referral to Angela.  You can reach her at 352-347-9038 or toll free at 866-347-9038.

Please join me in wishing Angela the best of luck in her new venture!

Oshkosh and Beyond by Ed Copes

This was our first trip to Oshkosh. We have made the trek to Lakeland every spring for the last ten years but this would be our first visit to the summer flying Mecca.  And although we didn’t achieve the full experience (flying our own plane), the almost full experience was quite a trip.

Due to time constraints we let Delta do the flying.  We flew into Milwaukee and stayed up in Appleton, about 20 miles north of Oshkosh.   Our first surprise came Saturday morning as we drove in to AirVenture.  The weather was perfect, this was the weekend, and I was expecting traffic snarls like I had experienced at Sun ‘n Fun years ago.  But, we drove in with hardly a slowdown and parked quite close to the gate.  We would find out later that attendance has been down for the past several years (more on that later).

A good size crowd still arrived, growing as the afternoon air show approached.  There was no shortage of planes and exhibits, and compared to Sun ‘n Fun there was just more of everything:  more planes, more exhibits, more forums, more food, more competition for your dollars.   And on top of all that you could get a ride in a Ford TriMotor or a B-17.

The real standouts at Oshkosh, as compared to Sun ‘n Fun, are the warbirds and the air show.  Warbird attendance has been pretty pitiful at Sun ‘n Fun lately, but at Oshkosh the warbirds stretch on for acres and there is even a re-creation of a WWII field camp, complete with MPs and GIs in uniform.  And at air show time, the T-6s, T-28s and P-51s fill the air, with special appearances by the B-17, B-24 and B-25.

The air show is worth the trip alone.  There are no fences at Oshkosh and the viewing area is close to the main runway.  With nothing blocking the view, the experience is up close and personal.

Many observers have noted that the growing size and commercialism at Oshkosh (and Sun ‘n Fun) has detracted from the original purpose of the event.  There is no doubt about who is paying the bills here – as you walk in the front gate you are greeted by Cirrus, Pilatus, Cessna, Piper and Ford.  And multiple food courts, complete with McDonalds.  And innumerable EAA merchandise tents, all selling the same merchandise (but already sold out of AirVenture 2004 t-shirts).  With all the hoopla over Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft, there is one small tent on the midway devoted to spreading the news.   The vendors making Light Sport a reality are relegated to the low rent exhibit areas on the fringes.

Attendance, including fly-in planes, peaked in the early 90’s and has been declining since.   The same seems to be true at Sun ‘n Fun, although attendance numbers for that event are notoriously inaccurate.   At the same time, however, there has been a growth in the regional fly-ins.  Just in the southeast, the South East Regional in Evergreen, Alabama has become a major event, the Mid-Atlantic in Lumberton, North Carolina seems headed for success, and this fall a new Sport Aviation Expo debuts in Sebring.  So it seems that the grass roots are alive and well, even if they have become somewhat displaced at the big national events.

It’s still a thrill though.  Where else can you see an RV-6 giving way as a C-5 taxies by?    And where else does the mere mention of the name, Oshkosh, raise the adrenaline level of everyone who loves aviation.  For all of us, it’s hard to be happier than when you’re immersed in this sea of anything and everything that has to do with flying.

We’ll be back next year.

Record Breaking Flight Set for Quincy Airport by Ed Copes

OK, we’re not talking Mojave and the X Prize here, but Rut Fuller intends to make a bit of aviation history right here at Quincy Airport.

One morning in the not-too-distant future Rut will climb to 10,000 feet over the Gadsden countryside in his modified Rans S-9 Chaos (http://www.rans.com/s-9.htm).  If he can get up there in under 9 minutes and 18 seconds, he will set a new time to climb world record for a class C1 a/o airplane.

Rut is awaiting delivery of a 130 horsepower Rotax 670 engine, which will replace the current 65-horse model.  He believes the extra horsepower will allow him to close in on the 8-minute mark.  His trial runs so far have put him in the 11-minute range.

By the rules of the competition, the takeoff weight of a C1 a/o plane cannot exceed 661 pounds (300 kg).  Rut has stripped the aircraft of every non-essential item, shedding 65 pounds, and he now has the empty weight down to 360 pounds.  Allowing a few more pounds for the new engine plus fuel and his own weight, the aircraft will be around 555 pounds at takeoff.

The National Aeronautic Association will send an official observer to time the flight.  The plane will be outfitted with a camera to snap a picture of the altimeter to document the altitude.   During a recent visit Rut was busy calibrating the plane’s altimeter and checking the pitot-static system.

The Havana and Quincy newspapers (link to article) have already published articles on the record attempt.  Rut says that the newspapers and additional press will be back to cover the flight.  The public will also be invited.

Rut is owner of Fuller Aviation, based at Quincy Airport.  Rut is a Rans dealer as well as an A&P mechanic and a private pilot.

Farewell to the Aerotiga

It's a melancholy day for Rich Ledson as he stands next his longtime dream plane the Aerotiga. It is being disasembled to be sent back to Malasia.

Rich has personally flown more than 300 hours in this fine aircraft.

EAA445 Invited to participate in WWII Static Display

August 8, 2004

Mr. John Sivyer

Experimental Aircraft Association

Chapter 445

Tallahassee, Florida 32310

Dear Sir,

On behalf of Florida State University, I would like to bring a worthy project to your attention:

To mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day, Florida State University is on a mission to honor the courageous veterans of World War II.  We are proud to invite EAA445  to join in this mission.

Beginning on October 6, 2004, a cadre of proud descendants of World War II veterans will conduct a march criss-crossing the state of Florida, starting in Miami and ending in Tallahassee.  The cadre will visit about 16 cities and sites historically linked to the war.

Clad in the military uniforms of their relatives, the marchers intend to call attention to this great generation and draw support for Florida State University’s Institute on World War II and the Human Experience.  If you are not familiar with the Institute, which is one of the country’s pre-eminent archives of this period, visit http://www.fsu.edu/~ww2/.  The Institute’s archives include Tom Brokaw’s collection of WWII documents and research materials from his three books.

The mission is being undertaken by FSU graduates and close friends of the university who all have one thing in common…they are all proud relatives of World War II veterans, or civilian workers who banded together in this most noble of causes.  Some of the enlistees were friends at FSU and some currently work together on the Miami-Dade Police Department.  All are proud of the service and sacrifices made by their family members.

The march will culminate in Tallahassee, which will include the FSU vs. University of Virginia football game, featuring a half-time show dedicated to WWII veterans everywhere.  Also scheduled are several gala events honoring veterans and raising funds to establish a permanent facility for the Institute.

We are requesting your participation in a static display of approximately six WWII era military aircraft on Saturday, October 16, 2004. The display will take place at Flightline Groups north leasehold area. Your past experience in this type endeavor would certainly be beneficial in making it a successful event.

It is clear that this project has the potential to draw public attention to FSU, the World War II Institute and EAA. You are cordially invited to join us in this worthy endeavor.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Hope you can put your “Hat in the Ring”,

Henry Gonzalez

Scott got us home safe.  N5331T touched down at it's new home about 8:30 PM. It was a beautiful first flight.  At Chattanooga a stranger rushed up when we landed and said "I want to see the glasses".  Flightline our FBO put out a red carpet for us.  A group of friends and relatives were waiting. We watched as N5331T got refueled and put in the hangar.

At the end of this long day, Pat and I were filled with gratitude for this huge gift and excitement for our new life.  We want to thank everyone at Sporty's for their gracious assistance.  You made us feel really special.
