EAA Affirms Commitment to Young Eagles Program – Harrison Ford is New Chairman

March 8, 2004 - Harrison Ford, best known as a renowned actor in more than three dozen films but also an extremely active pilot and member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), was introduced today as the new Chairman of the EAA Young Eagles Program, which has flown more than 1 million young people since 1992.

During a welcoming program at Van Nuys, Calif., with EAA President Tom Poberezny, Ford accepted the chairmanship of the program, saying, “It’s daunting to step into General Yeager’s shoes, but aviation is about learning new skills and the satisfaction that comes with practicing them and doing better.”  ...

FUEL PRICES CAUSE GA JITTERS from AvWEB
One factor that could crimp the FAA's cautiously rosy predictions for GA growth is the continuing rise in fuel prices. Prices at the pump last week hit an all-time high, the American Automobile Association reported, and aviation fuel prices are rising as well. If the climb continues, it could deflate aircraft sales, General Aviation Manufacturers Association President Ed Bolen told the FAA conference last week. "If fuel costs only go up 2 or 4 or 6 percent, that isn't make-or-break for a huge percentage of the population" that buys airplanes, Bolen said. "But if people say, 'I'm not as comfortable with the economy as I was six weeks ago because of fuel prices,' then [sales] could become a greater challenge." More...

NAVY PILOT EJECTS ON RUNWAY from AvWEB

A Navy pilot ejected from his F/A-18 Hornet on Friday about 2,000 feet into its takeoff roll at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, in North Carolina. The burning jet cartwheeled to a stop on the airfield. Emergency crews doused the flames, and nobody on the ground was hurt. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The jet was part of a two-aircraft flight on a routine cross-country training mission, and both jets had stopped at RDU to refuel. The other jet, which had taken off first, returned to the airport and landed safely. The Hornet was based at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia. More...

Capital City Air-Fest 2004  May 15th and 16th

  From The Left Seat -  John Sivyer

Planning for the Capital City Airfest has gotten off to a good start.  17 people showed up at our first meeting to see how they could help with the event.  Amazingly this was more than twice the number of members who regularly attended our monthly meetings just two years ago.

Several more people have sent e-mails asking how they could help.  We have developed a form on the website for those wishing to contribute http://www.s88555310.onlinehome.us:80/tinc?key=SeqWo0oh&formname=Airfest

Please take a couple of mins to fill out the form, even if you have already volunteered.   We will need all the help we can get.  If this event is successful it could be a big help in starting an airplane building project. Isn't that what EAAers are supposed to do? .....Stay Tuned!

I am excited and energized by my promotion to the Air Traffic Manager's position and very much look forward to insuring you, our customers, have the very best air traffic services possible.

Hello John;

just a note - your reference to the insurance problem brought back memories of when we started at Quincy. The City attorney wanted to close the field and make an industrial park of it so he kept jacking up the insurance requirements and anything else he could do to mess us up. We had to go to a three-day event to pay the premium on the 5 million ins. he wanted - then he demanded a copy of the original EAA HQ insurance document instead of the rider outlining coverage, which EAA refused, of course. We had to shut down the fly-in that year, causing an outcry from all the schools & churches that came out at no cost to them & sold food and stuff. so the next year they let us back.

Interesting side note - in 1974 we had over 350 aircraft attending, including a P-40, PT-19, PT-22, PT-17, T-6, many "spam cans" and homebuilts from as far as South Carolina. That was the year that a fellow and his wife from Lakeland Florida flew up in a Pacer to see how we did it. It was Billy & Adair Henderson, and the next year they started Sun-n Fun. last year, this had a 35 million dollar impact on the Lakeland economy, and we were way ahead of them until the city attorney crippled us. Quincy could have been Oshkosh South, and was well on the way for a couple of years. One greedy individual sure shot the City of Quincy right in the butt on that deal, but all he was interested in was the fees he would get from setting up the industrial park with a couple of his buddies.

Maybe I'll get up there yet - sure hoping to do that at least one more time.
